The second ODI between Pakistan and South Africa at Cape Town witnessed an intense on-field altercation between Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan and South African wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen. The disagreement reportedly began over the condition of the ball, with Klaasen expressing his dissatisfaction. Rizwan, however, dismissed the concerns and urged Klaasen to focus on the game.
The exchange grew heated, prompting intervention from players and umpires. During the break between the 26th and 27th overs, a voice was heard on the stump mic telling Klaasen to “shut up and play.” This incident added drama to an otherwise thrilling match.
Pakistan Clinch Series Despite Klaasen’s Heroics
Despite Klaasen’s valiant 97 off 74 balls, South Africa fell short as Pakistan secured a 2-0 series win with one match remaining. This victory marked Pakistan’s fifth consecutive series triumph, cementing their dominance in the southern hemisphere after victories in Australia and Zimbabwe. Rizwan and Babar Azam laid a solid foundation with a composed partnership of 192 runs.
Although both fell in quick succession, the platform they built allowed Kamran Ghulam to unleash a fiery 63 off 32 balls, including five sixes. Pakistan added a staggering 161 runs in the last 17 overs, finishing with a formidable total of 320-plus.
Klaasen’s Knock Overshadowed by Lack of Support
South Africa’s chase began promisingly, with all top six batters making starts. However, Klaasen was the only one to convert his effort into a substantial score. He smashed eight fours and four sixes in his 97-run innings, but the lack of support from his teammates proved costly.
Young left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka, making his debut, endured a tough outing, conceding 72 runs but claiming four wickets, including a stunning catch to dismiss Rizwan. Ultimately, Klaasen’s dismissal on the deep midwicket boundary sealed South Africa’s fate.
While the heated exchange between Rizwan and Klaasen grabbed headlines, the match itself showcased Pakistan’s all-around strength and Klaasen’s individual brilliance.
