One of the most heartbreaking losses in Nepal’s cricket history came in June 2023, during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, when Nepal narrowly lost to South Africa by a single run. Gulshan Jha was at the center of the drama, needing to score eight runs in the final over to seal a historic victory. Unfortunately, he managed just six runs and was run out on the last ball while attempting a risky single. His failure to guide Nepal over the line saw him become a target of intense criticism, with many fans viewing him as the villain of the game.
However, just four months later, Gulshan’s fortunes took a dramatic turn. In the inaugural Nepal Premier League (NPL) auction, he became the most sought-after player, with all eight teams bidding NPR 15 Lakhs for the young all-rounder. After a lucky draw, Gulshan was sold to the highest bidding team, Karnali Yaks, and suddenly, the same player who had been vilified became the most coveted player in Nepal’s cricketing landscape.
Gulshan’s rise to prominence began in 2021, during the Mayor’s Cup final, where he put up a stellar performance, taking four wickets against the Armed Police Force Club. At just 17, he made an instant impact with his pace and bounce, earning the Player of the Match award. His performance caught the attention of selectors, and he was soon called up to the senior side for the ICC Men’s CWC League 2 series against Oman and the USA. In his ODI debut against the USA, he managed to score 28 runs, though he went wicketless. His T20I debut came a year later, during the 2022 T20 World Cup Qualifiers against the Philippines, where he again displayed promise with both bat and ball.
Despite being in and out of the national team, Gulshan’s breakthrough came in the 2023 ICC Men’s CWC League 2 final against the UAE, where he scored a crucial half-century. His 50 runs, including four boundaries and two sixes, helped Nepal secure a nine-wicket win (DLS Method) and qualification for the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. A month later, he starred again against the UAE, scoring an unbeaten 67 runs and taking a vital wicket to earn Player of the Match honors in Nepal’s historic Asia Cup qualification.
Gulshan’s flexibility has been a key asset throughout his career. He has batted in all positions from numbers three to nine, adapting to whatever role the team requires. Hailing from Madhesh Province, Gulshan initially faced challenges in breaking into domestic cricket, but his performances, particularly in the Mayor’s Cup, changed his trajectory.
Today, Gulshan Jha is no longer viewed as the villain of Nepal cricket but as one of its brightest stars. His journey from World Cup heartbreak to becoming the most demanded player in the NPL showcases his resilience and immense talent, signaling a bright future for both him and Nepal cricket.
