Former Australian batsman Mark Waugh has named Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal as the next potential great in Test cricket during the ongoing 2025-26 Ashes series. While he listed Jaiswal, Harry Brook, and Rachin Ravindra as contenders for the title of the next red-ball star, Waugh ultimately chose Jaiswal as his top pick.
Jaiswal has enjoyed a stellar start to his Test career, amassing 2,511 runs in 28 matches at an average of 49.23, including seven centuries. He made an immediate impact by scoring 171 on his Test debut against the West Indies and has already notched two double-centuries along with five innings of 150 or more.
Asked who could be the next great Test batter, Mark Waugh told Kayo Sports:
“There are three in the running: Jaiswal, Brook, and Ravindra. I am going with Jaiswal, 24 years of age. He has already got a double hundred and averages just under 50. There’s something special about this kid. I’ve got Jaiswal as the next champion batter joining the elite group. Brilliant player, so that’s my pick, the young Indian.”
Michael Vaughan Names England Starlet As Next Test Great
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has named Harry Brook as a contender for the next great Test batsman, while also including Indian captain Shubman Gill in the conversation. Brook, like Yashasvi Jaiswal, has made an impressive start to his Test career, amassing 3,178 runs in 35 matches at an average of 54.79, with 10 centuries to his name.
“I’ll throw Shubman Gill’s name in there, but Harry Brook. Harry Brook is the next one we will be talking about. We are already talking about him on his trip, with the way he is playing. He has not got the amount of runs I expected, but over the course of the next 10 years, we are going to see some of the most extraordinary innings from this young chap.”
“He has already played many in his career so far. He’s an all-format player, and he is box office,” said Vaughan (via the aforementioned source).
