Tilak Varma’s Adaptability Shines For Team India

Tilak Varma has emerged as a promising talent for Team India, especially in the T20I format. The 22-year-old showcased his dominance during India’s tour of South Africa last November, where he requested to bat at No. 3. His performances validated the captain’s trust, as he scored two centuries—107 not out off 56 balls in Centurion and a remarkable 120 off 47 deliveries in Johannesburg.

While batting at No. 3 is his preferred position, Tilak has demonstrated his ability to adapt, stepping into various roles as required. His recent unbeaten 72 off 55 balls in the second T20I against England highlights his flexibility, as he guided India to victory while batting at No. 4.

Flexibility and Team-First Mindset

Despite his preference for No. 3, Tilak is committed to fulfilling the team’s requirements. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized his willingness to adjust to any batting position, having already batted at 4, 5, and 6 in both the IPL and international matches. “I prefer No. 3, but I’m truly flexible. Whatever the team needs, I’m ready to deliver,” he stated.

Tilak also credited his mental preparation for his ability to play different roles. During the second T20I, he focused on staying at the crease until the end and adjusting his strike rate based on the match situation. Guided by inputs from Gautam Gambhir, Tilak believes adaptability is key to success, as it allows him to contribute in various scenarios.

Game Plan and Execution Under Pressure

Tilak’s innings against England reflected his strategic approach to challenging conditions. Facing a two-paced wicket and a strong bowling attack, he tailored his game to utilize the pace of the bowlers effectively. By targeting areas behind the wicketkeeper, he maximized his scoring opportunities while avoiding risks. Tilak credited his calculated shot selection for his success, saying, “The wicket was tricky, so I focused on hitting in the V behind the stumps, and it worked.” His ability to adapt to the pitch and situation underlines his maturity as a player.

With his recent performances, Tilak Varma has not only solidified his place in the Indian T20I team but also proven his value as a versatile and dependable middle-order batter.
