Top 5 controversies of the IPL: IPL ever since its commencement has been making news for all the various reasons. Here are the reasons. Here is the list of controversies that tarnished the image of the league.

 

  1. Founder at Fault

Lalit Modi, who founded the concept of IPL, was removed from the post of Commissioner. This decision came after the matter was brought to the notice of BCCI President that he has committed money laundering, match fixing, gambling. He was sacked for his unreasonable acts in the year 2010 by the president of the BCCI.

2. Spot Fixing Scandal

In a sting operation carried out by the Delhi police, they have found evidences that revealed that three of the Rajasthan Royals players committed spot-fixing. The arrested players were S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, Ankeet Chavan along with 11 bookies on May 16th, 2014. The Rajasthan team management has suspended the three players, and BCCI called for an inquiry into the whole event. The major shock came when one of the top officials from the Chennai Super Kings Mr. Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested by the police on the allegations of match-fixing who is incidentally the son-in- law of the then president of the board, Mr. N. Srinvasan. The Delhi police, charge sheeted the tainted players of the RR team and subsequently the BCCI has banned them for life.

  1. Post-match trauma

The on-field brawl between Sreesanth and Harbhajan was one of the ugliest fights. In the inaugural season of the IPL former team, India’s players were involved in a slap gate incident. Harbhajan Singh, who was playing for the Mumbai Indians, slapped Sreesanth was a part of the Kings XI Punjab, after the match got concluded, Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth, when sree went to shake hands with him.

  1. Breakups

At the initial stages the league had 8 teams taking part but to due to issues cropping up with respect to the registration and other commercial aspects they could not increase the count of the cities representing in the IPL. The teams that made it to the IPL and vanished were Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala which was in connection to a with Mr. Shashi Tharoor who was the Union Minister back then.

  1. Spot fixing Sting

A television channel conducted a sting operation with a mission to get hold of players who agreed to take bribes to spot- fix. The footages were all over on the TV and the BCCI took the matter seriously and banned the players with immediate effect. The players caught in the sting operation were Shalabh Srivastava, TP Sudhindra, Abhinav Bali, Mohnish Mishra, Amit Yadav. The operation exposed that the franchises were willing to pay excess money beyond their usual match fees.
