Top 5 highest individual scores in women’s ODI

The first women’s ODI match was played during the inaugural edition of the 50 over women’s World Cup held in 1973 in England. The top three to four batters in ODI get a chance to score big runs and make a name for them.

It is rare for a women cricketer to score big runs there have been instances in the past where women batters have created history in ODI cricket.

Here we look at the top five highest individual scorers in women’s ODI:

  1. Belinda Clark – 229*

Belinda Clarke a former Australian cricketer made the highest individual score in women’s ODI. This match was played at Middle Income Group Ground, Bandra, Mumbai on 16th May 1997 during the Women’s World Cup. She scored 229* against Denmark women while opening the innings.

During the innings, Belinda Clarke faced 155 balls hitting 22 boundaries and 0 sixes at a strike rate of 147.74. LM Keightley made 60 while KM Rolton contributed 64. In their 50 overs, Australian women scored 412 for 3 in 50 overs and dismissed Denmark for 49 as it gave Australia a big win by 363 runs.

The young left-handed batter has the second highest individual scorer and also the top scorer for India in women’s ODI. She made the score of 188 at Potchefstroom, South Africa on 15th May 2017 during the quadrangular series.

During that innings, she put on 320 runs for the first wicket which is the highest in women’s ODI. In that knock, Deepti Sharma smashed 188 runs in 160 balls against Ireland women smashing 27 fours and 2 sixes with a strike rate of 117.50. With the opening partnership, the Indian women posted a massive total of 358 for 2 in 50 overs. Ireland women could not chase down the target as they were dismissed for 109 runs. India won the match by 249 runs.

Atapattumudiyanselage Chamari Jayangani created history by registering the third highest individual score in women’s ODI. This match was played County Ground, Bristol against defending Australia during yesterday match in the 11th edition of Women’s World Cup. Apart from AC Jayangani, the rest of Sri Lankan batters struggled.

She came at the fall of the second wicket at the score of 49. During the innings of 178*, the left-handed batter hit 22 boundaries and 6 sixes with a strike rate of 124.47. It was one of the best innings in women’s ODI cricket. Her knock helped Sri Lanka to post 257 for 9. Australian women chased down the target with ease as Meg Lanning scored 152*.

Charlotte Edwards, the former England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards register the fourth highest individual score in women’s ODI. She made 173* against Ireland women at Nehru Stadium, Poona on 16th December 1997. Edwards opened the innings for England and stayed unbeaten till the end of the innings.

During the knock of 173*, Edwards faced 155 balls hitting 19 fours and 0 sixes with a strike rate of 111.61. Cassar, Brittin contributed which helped England women post 324 for 3 in 50 overs. The Irish women were bowled for 116 in 41.1 overs giving them a 208 runs win.

Stephanie Taylor the hard-hitting batter from West Indies comes at number 5 in terms of highest individual score in women’s ODI. She made 171 of Sri Lankan women at Middle Income Group Ground, Bandra, Mumbai during the women’s World Cup held in India during 2013. This match was played on 3rd February.

Taylor opened the innings and smashed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground. She faced 137 balls for her 171 at a strike rate of 124.81. During the knock, she smashed 18 fours and 2 sixes which helped West Indies to post 368 for 8 wickets. Knight, Dottin, Aguillera contributed. While chasing, Sri Lankan women were bowled out for 159 in 40 overs. West Indies women won the match by 209 runs.
