Australian cricketer Travis Head has openly supported Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s decision to prioritize his family over cricket, as Rohit chose to stay back with his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, and their newborn son. Consequently, the Indian skipper will join the team late for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, missing the first Test scheduled at Perth Stadium on November 22.
While addressing the media during Australia’s practice session on November 18, Head emphasized that family moments are irreplaceable and that he would have made a similar decision in Rohit’s place. “As cricketers, we miss important milestones despite living a privileged life. If I were in his position, I would have done the same. Rohit has made the right call,” Head stated. His words resonate deeply, as he skipped a white-ball series against Pakistan recently to be with his wife Jess, who was expecting their second child.
Michael Clarke Shares Similar Sentiments
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke echoed similar feelings, recalling his own experience of becoming a parent. “The happiest day of my life was when my daughter was born. No cricketing achievement, not even a World Cup, can compare to that joy. The family must come first,” Clarke commented. Acknowledging Rohit’s absence, Clarke admitted that India would miss his leadership but stood firm in supporting the skipper’s decision, highlighting that cricket matches come and go, but such personal milestones are rare.
Rohit Sharma to Rejoin Indian Team Soon
According to reports, Rohit Sharma will join the Indian squad during the first Test in Perth, where Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team in his absence. Rohit is expected to participate in a two-day warm-up match at Manuka Oval, Canberra, starting November 30, before returning as captain for the pink-ball Test in Adelaide on December 6.
Rohit’s decision to delay his arrival reflects the growing acknowledgment in cricket circles about balancing personal life with professional commitments. With support from peers like Travis Head and Michael Clarke, his choice underscores the universal truth that family moments hold an unparalleled value.
