Australian opener Travis Head revealed that several players in their camp are ill during the limited-overs series in England. With the fifth and final ODI on Sunday, September 29, serving as the series decider, Head expressed that he’s hitting the ball well and aims to finish the series strongly.
Australia won the first two ODIs but allowed England to equalize after a 186-run defeat at Lord’s. Rain in London shortened the match to 39 overs, leading to Australia being bowled out for 126 in 24.4 overs, while England secured an easy victory.
In a press conference following the fourth ODI, Head was quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald:
“It would’ve been nice to hit a few more, but I felt like I’m hitting the ball nicely, could just do it for longer. A couple of the boys have been crook and it hasn’t been ideal. Personally, I’m hoping to go out with a bang in a couple of days.”
Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Hazlewood, and Adam Zampa fell ill during the ongoing tour. Meanwhile, Head, who missed the third ODI, made a strong start at Lord’s, partnering with Mitchell Marsh for a 68-run opening stand. However, the middle order faltered significantly on a pitch that offered substantial seam movement.
“I found out as we were getting on the team bus” –Travis Head addressed the news of Cameron Green being sidelined for the remaining matches
With all-rounder Cameron Green ruled out for the rest of the England tour, Head voiced his disappointment but noted that recovery is on schedule.
“Greeny’s gone home … I found out as we were getting on the team bus. I’ve got my phone back now and I’ll reach out to him, obviously disappointing for him, but he’ll go home and get things sorted. He’s been through these things before, Cam, it’s disappointing, but he’ll know the way to get back,” he said in the same press conference.
Green may sit out the limited-overs series at home against Pakistan in order to be fit for the Test series against India later this year.
