Australian batter Travis Head has solidified his reputation as a dominant force against India, scoring his third century in four Tests during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the third Test at the Gabba, Head smashed an unbeaten 103 off 115 balls, including 13 boundaries. This marks his ninth Test century and his second consecutive triple-figure score in the series. Head’s consistency against India is remarkable, with three of his career centuries coming against the team in just four Tests.
The left-hander’s first ton against India was a match-winning 163 in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June 2023. He followed this with another outstanding knock of 137 during the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad, where India faced a crushing defeat on home soil.
Head’s Dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Series
Head has been Australia’s linchpin in the current Border-Gavaskar series, boasting an average of 113. He started the series with a pivotal 89 in the second innings at Perth and has continued his form into the Gabba Test. Head’s dominance is a concern for India, as Australia has never lost a Test match where he scored a century.
His remarkable performance in this series has left India on the back foot, with the possibility of missing the WTC final for a third consecutive time if they lose this Test. With his ability to capitalize under pressure, Head has emerged as a key figure in Australia’s batting lineup.
Australia Takes Control on Day 2
On Day 2, Travis Head played a central role in helping Australia recover from an early collapse. India’s Jasprit Bumrah had reduced Australia to 38/2 within the first half-hour, dismissing both openers. However, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the ship with a crucial partnership before Labuschagne fell to Nitish Reddy, leaving the hosts at 104/3 by lunch.
Post-lunch, Head and Smith dominated the Indian bowling attack, adding an unbroken 159-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Head’s aggressive yet controlled approach contrasted with Smith’s steady 65*, as Australia reached a commanding 234/3 at tea. The Indian bowlers struggled for breakthroughs, failing to disrupt Australia’s momentum during the wicket-less second session.
