Umpiring has been under the spotlight in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the UAE. It once again grabbed the headlines after the TV gave a controversial decision to give David Warner out during the Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi.
The incident took place in the final over of the powerful as Bangalore tried to pose all sorts of pressure while defending a small total. It’s an absolute beauty of a delivery from Mohammed Siraj. It seamed in big time, following David Warner backing away and cutting him in half. There was a bit of sound as the ball goes through Warner’s bat and body, however, the on-field umpire ruled it out.
Controversial decision gets David Warner out
Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli thought it was the glove and went for the review. But the thigh pad is very close too which had the TV umpire in dilemma. There’s a spike when the ball’s simultaneously under the glove and over the thigh pad.

It all boiled down to the third umpire who decided that there’s enough evidence to overturn this. David Warner’s departure is a huge wicket for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who has once again found themselves back in the game. Sunrisers Hyderabad now might find it difficult to chase down 132 runs with the wicket offering turn and Bangalore playing with four international spinners in their playing XI.
Meanwhile, the departure garnered a lot of reaction on social media. While many thought it was a brave decision from the umpire, many thought there was no conclusive evidence to overturn the decision of the on-field umpire.
Here are some of the reactions:
That is NOT FAIR.

That's a very very fraught decision to give Warner. If there was that much doubt it had to go to the batsman. And that spike could have also been from the ball hitting the batsman's clothes. Shocker!

Not enough conclusive evidence to overturn that. #SRH and Warner will feel hard done by. #SRHvsRCB

With that decision of Warner being overturned. Is it worth investing in hotspot? Honestly not sure of why it isn’t included to assist the third umpire…@hemantbuch do you know the answer?

What happened to "conclusive evidence" & staying with the umpire's decision???
Whether you think it was OUT or NOT – if it needs 15+ looks and still looks iffy, do you not stay with the umpire on field?#Warner going makes this a proper chase!#SRH #RCBvSRH #IPL2020

No glove not out

The one where he was given not out. The one where it has to be conclusive to overturn. The one where he said it hit my leg as he walked off. The key is CONCLUSIVE to overturn https://t.co/cN9N6uXrTU

Of all the things SRH have overcome in their campaign, need put that ‘out’ right on top!
If you’re spending 10 minutes watching replays, why not go with the on-field umpire’s decision (like has happened a few times this season!)— Mendra Dorjey Sahni (@MendraDorjey) November 6, 2020
