From 9 for 1 on Day 2, India went down to 36 for 9 in a dramatic batting collapse before Virat Kohli declared the Indian innings on that score after Mohammed Shami got hit by Pat Cummins while batting. That leaves India with just 90 runs to defend as Australia look favorites to get the game done and dusted on Day 3 itself. None of the Indian batsmen got to double figures with Mayank Agarwal (9) and Hanuma Vihari (8) finishing as the top two scorers.
The cream of India’s batting line-up, the middle-order had no answers to the duo of Cummins and Hazlewood bowling in tandem. While Hazlewood took a fifer, his eighth in tests. In the process, Hazlewood got to 200 Test wikets as well. Cummins finished with four wickets. The two of them completely decimated the Indian batting line-up.

Virat Kohli (4), Cheteshwar Pujara (0) and Ajinkya Rahane (0) were clueless to the pace and swing and movement of the Aussie bowlers. This was by far’s India worst slide while batting in their recent history in test cricket. The weakness of the technique of the Indian batsmen were exposed bitterly by the Australian bowlers. The Australian bowlers on the other hand were on the money right from the first ball on day 3. They kept probing the Indian batsman outside the off stump and they succumbed to the pressure of scoring runs.
Story of India’s Dramatic Batting Collapse
From 7 for 1 at stumps on Day 2, India were brought down to 19 for 6 inside the first half-hour of day 3 and were 31-9 after the fall of Hanuma Vihari for 8. India finally declared on 36 for 9 after Mohammed Shami coped up with an injury on his bowling arm. This was also India’s lowest ever total in Test Cricket.
He looked in pain and had problems holding his bat, which is when Kohli decided to declare the Indian innings. There is all the possibility that Shami might miss the next test match with injury. With Ishant Sharma already missing, Shami’s absence will be a body blow to the Indian bowling line-up.

India might have only got 36, but Australia still need 90 to win, the scoreboard doesn't say the entire picture! Cricket is a funny game and I m still on the edge on this one! #INDvAUS

The sad thing is, New Zealand now might face Australia in that Lord's final. That's the opposition they have a mental scare with.
