The United Arab Emirates (UAE) have secured their place in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after an impressive victory over Japan in the Asia / East Asia-Pacific Qualifier held in Oman.
This crucial win ensured that the UAE joined Nepal and host Oman as the three teams from the regional qualifier to advance to next year’s tournament, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka. The qualification marks another milestone for the UAE in international cricket, underlining their steady progress in the shortest format.
With the win, UAE confirmed the 20-team lineup for the 2026 event, which promises to be one of the most competitive editions yet.
Dominant UAE Performance Ends Japan’s Dream Run
Japan, who had shown flashes of promise throughout the qualifiers, struggled to handle the disciplined bowling attack of the UAE. Batting first, Japan’s innings got off to a difficult start, losing key wickets early and stumbling to 25 for 3 during the Powerplay. Their batting lineup found it tough to recover against the UAE’s controlled pace and spin combination. Despite the early collapse, Japan’s Wataru Miyauchi displayed grit and determination, remaining unbeaten on 45 from 32 balls to help his team post a modest total.
The highlight for UAE’s bowling unit was Haider Ali, who produced an excellent spell of 3 wickets for just 12 runs in three overs, effectively breaking Japan’s backbone in the middle overs. His precision and variations restricted Japan to a below-par score, setting up an easy chase for the Emirati batters.
UAE’s Confident Chase and Return to the Global Stage
In response, the UAE began their run chase with authority and confidence. Skipper Muhammad Waseem led from the front, scoring a brisk 42 off 26 deliveries, while Alishan Sharafu complemented him with a fluent 46 off 27 balls. The pair’s aggressive batting ensured that the game was finished well within 13 overs, reflecting the team’s superior experience and composure under pressure. This victory not only secured their qualification but also marked UAE’s return to the global stage after missing out on the 2024 edition.
The 2026 tournament will be their third T20 World Cup appearance, having previously featured in 2014 and 2022. In the 2022 edition, they registered a memorable win against Namibia but failed to advance beyond the group stage. With renewed form and a balanced side, the UAE now aim to make a stronger impression in 2026 and continue their rise in world cricket.
