Defending 163 it could have been an ideal start for the hosts but Sanju Samson dropped an easy catch to dismiss Pathum Nissanka. Hardik Pandya was not happy with his effort of Samson giving him a staring look after the drop chance. The Indian Team’s home season started with a thrilling 2-run win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I match played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 3 January 2023.

After being invited into bat by Dasun Shanaka, the Indian top order comprising debutant Shubman Gill, Surya Kumar Yadav, and Sanju Samson failed to contribute. Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda rescued the Indian innings putting on unbeaten 68 runs for the 6th wicket to help them post 162 for 5.

Umran Malik bowled with pace and troubled the Sri Lankan batters. He produced a sharp bouncer to get rid of Charith Asalanaka as Ishan Kishan took a stunning catch. Malik was bought into the attack and dismissed the Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka. During that over, he bowled at a speed of 155 KMPH. It was a remarkable bowling effort by Umran Malik ending with figures of 2 for 27 in 4 overs. The Indian team won the match by 2 runs as Axar Patel was handed the 20th over.
