India’s team management reportedly brought Vaibhav Suryavanshi into the playing XI earlier than planned amid growing indirect pressure during the recently concluded T20I series against England. The teenage opener made his international debut in the second T20I at Old Trafford after Sanju Samson endured a lean run of form in Ireland and England.
With Samson managing just six runs across three matches, India opted for a change at the top of the order. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, whose selection had been widely backed by fans and experts following his impressive IPL 2026 campaign, was handed an opportunity but struggled to make an impact.
The youngster scored 42 runs in three innings at an average of 14 before being left out for the final T20I in Southampton, where Samson returned to the XI despite not being part of India’s upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.
“It was decided that for the first six matches, Sanju Samson would continue as the opener. If Sanju Samson had not been among the runs in those six matches, then Vaibhav would have been brought in.”
“Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were on the same page regarding this. So, Vaibhav wasn’t supposed to play in the first six matches, but they had to play him after indirect pressure,” a report in Dainik Jagran reads.
Sanju Samson failed to capitalise on his return to the playing XI, scoring 27 runs in India’s 56-run defeat in the fifth T20I, as the visitors suffered a 0-4 series loss.
Report Denies Rift Between Gautam Gambhir And Ajit Agarkar
Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik sparked speculation after suggesting there could be differences between head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar over their vision for the Indian team.
“A bit of friction between the chief selector and head coach. I feel Agarkar has long-term plans, and the current coach is saying, “You know, I want to win every game I play.” Hence, the confusion we see unfolding before us. Is it ideal for the players? Definitely not,” Karthik said on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
However, the report stated that the two key figures in Indian cricket remain on the same page, with no differences between them at present.
“Sources close to both figures have denied such claims. Agarkar and Gambhir talk to each other twice a day. However, these two are not happy with some overactive selectors in the panel who are busy proving to the bosses that the team is being built because of them,” the report adds.
The BCCI is set to hold a review meeting after the ongoing overseas tour, with a particular focus on India’s disappointing T20I series defeats in Ireland and England.
