Varun Chakravarthy Caps Dream 2025 With Record-Breaking T20I Feat

Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy signed off 2025 with a truly memorable run in T20 international cricket, emerging as the most successful wicket-taker among players from Test-playing nations. The mystery spinner enjoyed a year marked by consistency, control, and match-winning spells, finishing with 36 wickets in 20 matches at an excellent average of 13.19 and an economy rate slightly above seven runs per over.

His ability to trouble batters with variations earned him a five-wicket haul and a four-wicket spell during the year, with best figures of 5 for 24. These numbers placed him alongside Pakistan’s Mohammed Nawaz as the joint-highest wicket-taker from a Test-playing nation in 2025, underlining his impact across conditions and opponents.

Record-Breaking Performance Against South Africa

Varun’s dominance was on full display during the fifth and final T20I against South Africa in Ahmedabad, where he once again rose to the occasion. The 34-year-old spinner claimed four wickets in his allotted four overs, conceding 53 runs, and played a key role in tilting the contest in India’s favour. He ended the series as the leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets, maintaining an impressive average of 11.20 and an economy rate of 7.46.

Over time, South Africa has been one of his favourite opponents, and this series further strengthened that record, taking his tally against them to 22 wickets in just eight matches at a remarkable average of 11.36. By the end of the year, Varun also became India’s second-highest wicket-taker in a single calendar year in T20Is, finishing just one wicket behind Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 2022 mark of 37 wickets.

India’s Clinical Win Seals Series 3-1

The match itself saw India produce a strong all-round performance to close out the series. After being put in to bat, the Indian openers provided a brisk start, laying a solid foundation in the powerplay. Despite a brief slowdown following the loss of a couple of quick wickets, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya rebuilt and then accelerated with a crucial 105-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Their efforts lifted India to an imposing total of 231 for 5 in 20 overs.

In reply, South Africa began positively, with Quinton de Kock anchoring the chase through a fluent half-century. However, Varun Chakravarthy’s timely breakthroughs halted the momentum, and once key batters were dismissed, the visitors struggled to keep up with the required run rate.

South Africa eventually finished on 201 for 8, falling short by 30 runs. While Hardik Pandya was named Player of the Match, Varun fittingly took home the Player of the Series award, capping a year where he consistently rewrote the T20I record books.
