The recent stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has cast a shadow over Indian cricket. On June 4, a crowd surge claimed the lives of 11 passionate fans, raising concerns about safety measures and the overall management of major sporting events in the country.
The tragedy has not only shaken the cricketing fraternity but also triggered discussions on the future of the historic venue. Among the voices to respond strongly is former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad, who highlighted the need to both honor the memories of those lost and to restore the stadium’s reputation.
Prasad’s Vision for the Iconic Stadium
Prasad, currently contesting in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections, has made the revival of the Chinnaswamy Stadium one of his central promises. He believes that while the incident was heartbreaking, abandoning the venue is not the solution.
Instead, he proposes transforming it into a smart stadium—modernized with advanced facilities, digital ticketing systems, crowd management technologies, and enhanced safety protocols to avoid a repeat of such disasters.
He also suggested increasing the current seating capacity from 35,000 to nearly 50,000, ensuring more fans can enjoy matches without overcrowding issues. According to Prasad, Bengaluru’s cricket culture deserves a venue that blends tradition with modern infrastructure, enabling the stadium to host not only domestic and international matches but also major ICC events in the future.
Expanding Cricket Infrastructure Beyond Bengaluru
While emphasizing Chinnaswamy’s importance, Prasad also highlighted the need to decentralize cricket infrastructure in Karnataka. He revealed plans to construct a world-class stadium in Mysuru, which could serve as an alternative hub for international matches. This, he believes, will reduce the over-dependence on Bengaluru and distribute opportunities for cricket development more evenly across the state.
Prasad stressed that close coordination with the Karnataka government will be key in implementing these changes. His vision aims at reviving public confidence, upgrading facilities, and creating a fan-friendly environment that reflects the stature of Indian cricket.
The Bengaluru tragedy has brought stadium safety and crowd management into sharp focus. Venkatesh Prasad’s proposals—ranging from upgrading Chinnaswamy into a modern smart stadium to expanding cricket into Mysuru—represent a forward-looking approach.
While the scars of the incident remain, his vision offers hope that the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium can be reborn stronger, safer, and better equipped to serve future generations of cricket fans.
