The Bangladesh Cricket Board has appointed all-rounder Shakib AL Hasan as the next Bangladesh captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup 2023 to be played in India starting on 5th October.
Shakib AL Hasan will replace Tamim Iqbal for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh has been clubbed with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan for 50 over edition of the Asia Cup.
“Shakib Al Hasan is the captain for the Asia Cup, New Zealand series, and World Cup,” he said. “We will speak more to him when he returns to Bangladesh [from Lanka Premier League].
Bangladesh will open their Asia Cup campaign against Sri Lanka at Palleke, Kandy on 31st August before visiting to Lahore for their 2nd group match against Afghanistan to be played on 3rd September 2023. Shakib AL Hasan will be leading Bangladesh in all three formats. His third captaincy stint for Bangla Tigers began last year during T20I and Test format.
Tamim Iqbal quilted Bangladesh ODI captain due to fitness issues as he recovers from back injury. The Bangladesh opener is ruled out of Asia 2023 starting from 30th August. They would be hoping to see Tamim be fit for the ODI Series against New Zealand beginning on 21 September and then the 2023 World Cup that follows.
Shakib AL Hasan’s captaincy stint and performance for Bangladesh
Shakib AL Hasan led Bangladesh in 49 One-day internationals and was appointed the captain for the ICC World Cup 2011 jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Out of 49 matches between 2009 and 2011, the all-rounder won 22 matches out of them.
He again captained Bangladesh on three more occasions in ODIs between 2015 and 2017 because Mashrafe Mortaza was injured. He has captained in 50 ODIs winning 23, losing 26, and 1 no-result. He has captained Bangladesh in 19 Test matches and 39 T20Is.
Shakib AL Hasan has been the backbone of Bangladesh cricket for a long time. The all-rounder made his Test debut against India on 18th May 2007. Since his debut, he played a total of 66 Test matches (121 innings) and scored 4454 runs including the best score of 217. His performance with the ball has been special picking up 233 wickets from 66 matches (111 innings) including best figures of 7/36.
He made his ODI Debut for Bangladesh against Zimbabwe on 6th August 2006. Since his debut, Shakib played a total of 235 matches (232 innings) and scored 7211 runs including the best score of 134. With the ball, he has taken 305 wickets from 235 matches (229 innings) with best figures of 5/29. Shakib has featured in 5 50 World Cups including 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and the upcoming 2023 World Cup to be played in India.
Shakib played a total of 117 matches ( 115 innings) in the T20I format with 2382 runs including the best score of 84. He is currently the leading wicket in T20I format picking 140 scalps from 117 matches with best figures of 5/20. AL Hasan played in every T20 World Cup including 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, and 2022.
