In the Georgie Pie Super Smash T20 tournament played during 2014/15 season, the audience takes a handed catch and wins 5000 dollars for his brilliant effort. The match took place between Otago Volts and Wellington Firebirds on 9th November 2014 at Hamilton.
During that match Otago, Volts Captain Ryan Ten Doeschate won the toss and elected to bat. The incident during the 13th over as Micheal Bracewell hit a big six. The bowler has experienced Jeetan Patel who was bowling his last over. Andrew McCulloch took a brilliant one-handed catch coming forward. It was a night match.
Bracewell made 40 runs as Otago Volts made 169 for 7 in 20 overs. Jeetan Patel went for 36 runs in his 4 overs. While chasing the target of 170, Wellington Firebirds won a thrilling match which went down to the wire. Grant Elliott was the top scorer with 43. Wellington reached the target with 2 balls to spare and 3 wickets remaining.
The 2014/15 Super Smash tournament saw Wellington Firebirds defeating Auckland Aces by just 6 runs. Wellington Firebirds made 186 for 6 in 20 overs while Auckland Aces fell scored 180 for 9 in 20 overs.
T20 tournament in New Zealand began from 2005. Auckland Aces have won the local T20 tournament the most 4 times, Otago Volts, Wellington Firebirds, Central Stags, Knights have won 2 times each. Canterbury Kings have won it only once.
The names of the local T20 tournament have changed. In 2005-06, the name of the tournament was New Zealand T20 competition in 2005-06, State Twenty T20 from 2006-07, 2008-09, HRV Cup/ Twenty T20 from 2009-10 to 2013-14, Georgie Pie Super Smash from 2014/15 to 2015/16, McDonald”s Super Smash in 2016/17 season. This year it was named as Burger King Super Smash.
