Kohli reflected on the 2014-15 Australia series, recounting the pivotal moment when MS Dhoni stepped down from Test captaincy. At just 25, Kohli was handed the responsibility of leading a young team. He shared how this challenge motivated him rather than overwhelming him. “The exciting thing about Test cricket for me was the challenge. We were in a transition phase with a young team, and Mahi bhai had left Test captaincy. I was 25, surrounded by 24-25-year-olds. I knew I had to plan things out. This couldn’t be left to chance,” Kohli revealed during the interview, facilitated by the BCCI.
Kohli’s approach was not to be intimidated by the responsibility but to embrace it wholeheartedly. He recounted his thought process: “When I began thinking about where Indian cricket needed to be in seven years, the solutions started to come. We needed a solid group of fast bowlers, batters who could bat long, and a consistent strategy to put up 350-400 runs. The challenge didn’t scare me—it excited me, and that’s when I knew I was fully committed.”

Gambhir praised Kohli’s leadership, particularly his focus on building a strong bowling unit. “I understand the pressure you faced as a 24-25-year-old taking up Test captaincy. What stood out was how you developed a strong bowling attack. Test matches are won by taking 20 wickets, and that’s what made you the most successful Test captain in India,” Gambhir remarked.
He further credited Kohli for fostering a competitive mindset, especially during overseas tours. “Having bowlers like Shami, Bumrah, Ishant, and Umesh, and then winning abroad was remarkable. I remember your knock in Adelaide, where you chased 400 in your first game as captain. That’s the mindset and culture we aim to bring,” Gambhir concluded.
