The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had to cancel their only practice session before their crucial IPL 2024 Eliminator match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) due to a serious security threat to their star player, Virat Kohli. This unexpected development occurred just a day before the match was set to take place.
RCB were supposed to practice at the Gujarat College Ground in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, but the session was called off. According to a report by Anandabazaar Patrika, RCB also decided not to hold a press conference on the eve of the match, adding to the unusual circumstances. The primary reason for these cancellations was reportedly related to a security concern for Virat Kohli.
The Gujarat Police suggested that the threat was significant enough to warrant such actions. In connection to the security concerns, the police reportedly arrested four individuals in Ahmedabad on suspicion of terrorist activities. This heightened the sense of urgency and caution for the team. Upon being informed by the police, RCB chose to cancel all their scheduled activities for the day.
Which included the practice session and the press conference, to ensure the safety of their players, especially Virat Kohli. On the other hand, the Rajasthan Royals proceeded with their planned schedule despite being informed of the same security threat. This incident highlights the significant measures sports teams must sometimes take to protect their players, especially high-profile athletes like Virat Kohli, from potential threats.
Heightened Security Concerns Lead to Canceled Practice Sessions for RCB
The decision to cancel the practice session and other activities underscores the seriousness of the situation and the priority given to player safety.
“Virat Kohli learned about the arrests after arriving in Ahmedabad. He is a national treasure, and his security is our utmost priority,” Vijay Singha Jwala, a police officer, said. RCB did not want to take a risk. They informed us that there would be no practice session. Rajasthan Royals were also informed about the development, but they had no problems going ahead with their practice.”
The police have increased security outside the hotel where the RCB team is staying. It was reported that even IPL-accredited individuals were not permitted to enter the hotel. Additionally, a ‘green corridor’ was established to ensure the Rajasthan Royals could reach their training ground safely.
Several players, including R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Riyan Parag, decided to skip the practice session and stay at the hotel, while their captain, Sanju Samson, arrived at the practice ground later than planned.
Enhanced security measures are also expected to be in place for the IPL 2024 Eliminator match between RCB and RR on Wednesday.
