Virat Kohli Opens Up On Test Retirement Amid Lighthearted Banter

In a rare and candid moment, Virat Kohli addressed the topic of Test retirement during a charity event organized by Yuvraj Singh’s YouWeCan Foundation on July 9, 2025. The event was graced by several cricket legends including Chris Gayle, Kevin Pietersen, Gautam Gambhir, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, and Ravi Shastri.

While interacting on stage, Kohli responded to a light-hearted comment about aging. With his trademark wit, he remarked, “I just dyed my beard two days ago. You know the time is coming when you’re coloring it every four days,” sparking laughter from the audience. Though playful in tone, it marked the first time the iconic batter hinted at contemplating the end of his Test career.

Fond Memories of the Indian Dressing Room

Kohli also took a moment to reflect on the early days of his international career, expressing heartfelt gratitude toward his former teammates. He specifically mentioned the influence of senior players like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Zaheer Khan, who he said played crucial roles in making him feel welcomed and supported when he first joined the Indian team.

Kohli noted that the camaraderie and mentorship he experienced in the dressing room were instrumental in shaping his journey in international cricket. These relationships, he implied, created a strong foundation that helped him thrive during his initial years.

Emotional Tribute to Ravi Shastri

One of the most emotional moments of the evening came when Kohli spoke about Ravi Shastri, the former India head coach. He praised Shastri not only for his strategic cricketing guidance but also for the personal support he extended during challenging times.

Kohli highlighted how Shastri frequently took the brunt of criticism in the media, shielding the players, particularly during press conferences when the team was under fire. He emphasized that not many people would have stood by him the way Shastri did, and he will always hold immense respect for him. “He always stood in front and took the bullets. I’ll always be grateful for that,” Kohli said, underlining the coach-player bond they shared.
