In a surprising disclosure, ex-South Africa captain Dean Elgar revealed that Virat Kohli “spat” at him during the Proteas’ 2015 tour of India. Elgar responded by threatening to confront him physically on the field. During South Africa’s all-format series in India in 2015, which consisted of four Tests, including Kohli’s inaugural home series as captain, the incident occurred.

The first match took place at the IS Bindra Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, marking the first time Kohli and Elgar faced each other in red-ball cricket. During an episode of the “Banter, with The Boys” podcast on Betway South Africa’s YouTube channel, Elgar shared his experience, stating:

“Those wickets were jokes. Like playing on that… that surface there. And I came into bat and I was actually like holding my own against Ashwin and what’s his name Jeja, Jeja, Jeja (Ravindra Jadeja) (smiles) and Kohli, he like spat at me. I said to him if you do that, I’ll f*****g ***** you with this bat,” he added, using a local profanity.”

The host inquired if Virat Kohli understood the meaning of the word. Elgar responded:

“Yes, he did because de Villiers was his teammate at RCB, so he understood. And I said if you do that, I’ll … on this field, I’ll absolutely knock you out. And then [he said] ‘Hey F*** you, F*** you’ (mimicking the Indian) but barking up the wrong tree yeah. Anyways, we are in India so you got to be a little bit cautious.”

India emerged victorious in the series with a 3-0 score, and the two had numerous on-field interactions thereafter. The rivalry concluded earlier this year when Elgar retired following the New Year’s Test in Cape Town. Kohli marked the occasion by gifting him a jersey signed by all the Indian players.

Virat Kohli has opted to rest for the initial two Tests against England

India is currently engaged in a five-Test series against England at home, commencing with a close victory for the visitors in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Virat Kohli, the team’s No. 4 batsman, has opted for a break during the initial two matches due to personal reasons. He is anticipated to make his return for the third Test scheduled for February 15 in Rajkot.
