Indian batting star Virat Kohli revealed his decision to retire from T20I cricket after the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was held in the West Indies and the USA. Following India’s triumphant campaign, Kohli officially bid farewell to the shortest format, ending a remarkable T20I career that began in 2010 and spanned 125 matches.
His retirement announcement during the post-match presentation surprised many, especially given his outstanding form and peak fitness. Virat Kohli had recently claimed the Orange Cap in IPL 2024 and had been consistently scoring runs, adapting his game to match the evolving demands of modern T20 cricket.
Kohli wasn’t the only one to retire from T20Is, senior players Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja also announced their retirement after India won the title. The star cricketer admitted he wasn’t feeling confident before the final, as he had managed to score just 75 runs across seven innings in the tournament.
“I was more grateful than proud. I knew I was going to retire after that. Irrespective of the result, my decision was made. I was very clear that this is my last T20 tournament. I was walking in with no confidence, I have to be very honest. When things are supposed to unfold for you, I get three balls, I get three boundaries, and I am like, ‘What is this game?'” Kohli said on the RCB Podcast.
“They are playing a different game than we did”- Virat Kohli explains his T20I retirement
After senior players’ retirement, Team India has shifted focus, with Suryakumar Yadav appointed captain and young batters like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Verma making their mark. Kohli stated his retirement was to allow emerging players time to prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
“The decision was taken purely understanding that there are a new set of players more than ready. There is no denying it, these guys are playing a different game altogether from what we played, and they need time.”
”They need a two-year cycle to evolve, handle pressure, play in different parts of the world, and play enough games to the point where, when the World Cup comes, they feel like they are ready,” Kohli said.
