The former cricket player for New Zealand, Mike Hesson, responded to questions about Virat Kohli’s performance for India in Test matches. Hesson claims that at this point in his career, Kohli is more focused on winning games for India than he is on hitting personal records. For Australia, who will host India for a five-match Test series beginning on November 22, this change in emphasis could be problematic.

According to Hesson’s evaluation, Kohli is a more dangerous opponent because of his renewed focus on team success. Given his already stellar individual achievements, Kohli’s determination to help India win the series could be crucial. Australia, which is already under duress, will have to come up with plans to stop this new and improved Kohli.

“Virat Kohli won’t let the game drift”- Mike Hesson

The growing apprehension regarding Virat Kohli’s performance in Test cricket for India was discussed by former New Zealand cricketer Mike Hesson. He said that at this point in his career, Kohli is more concerned with winning games for India than he is with reaching personal goals. The standout hitter, Kohli, has only managed two hundreds in the format since 2019. Both fans and pundits have drawn attention to his declining numbers in the Fab Four contest.

“I think Virat Kohli is at that stage in his career where he just wants to try and win games for India. And I think that’s a dangerous stage for other sides, because if he’s doing that rather than focusing on numbers, the big scores will come naturally” Mike Hesson said.

“The ability to hold a tempo in Australia is so important—being able to counterattack and knowing the right moments to do so. As mentioned, from 30 to 60 overs is a key phase. If Kohli is batting at that point, he won’t let the game drift. It’s about finding gaps, hitting gaps, getting ones and twos, and then, if they try and attack him, then he can counterattack,” Mike Hesson told Jio Cinema.

Kohli scored 6 and 17 in the opening Test, capping off his much anticipated Test return. Kohli, nevertheless, made amends for himself by scoring a smooth 47 off of just 35 balls and an undefeated 29. For Kohli, the Australia series holds great significance as it has been his favorite hunting ground since 2012.
