Gautam Gambhir is largely regarded as the next head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, however, he will allegedly not accompany the Men in Blue to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series in July.

PTI reported that VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and his support personnel will coach India during the Zimbabwe tour. Currently training under Laxman at the NCA in Bengaluru are the top young players from the IPL and the BCCI’s “targeted list of players,” who will be joined by the Zimbabwe side around June 22 or 23.

Rahul Dravid’s term with Team India will conclude on June 30, following the conclusion of the present T20 World Cup in 2024. Laxman has stepped in several times in Dravid’s absence, and this trend is expected to continue.

India won several bilateral series and the October 2023 Asian Games under his direction. Beginning on July 27, Gambhir is expected to be included in the team for the series against Sri Lanka. Though nothing official has been stated, it is anticipated that many senior cricket players will rejoin the team.

The appointment of the Indian coach of cricket was stated to be pending and Gautam Gambhir was named as India’s cricket team coach. Laxman, who is at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), will therefore bring the Indian team to the Zimbabwe camp.

The BCCI has shortlisted and conducted interviews with an Indian cricketer and a World Cup-winning legend, Gautam Gambhir for the post of interim chairman.

Later on in July, the T20s World Cup series will be over, and in the next series, India will be moving to Zimbabwe for 5 T20I matches. For the Indian side, the prevailing expectation is that the young players will be on the tour and that the typical and senior players might be released.

While it may be too early to predict the Indian team for this series, the crux of the support staff, including Laxman, may arrive tomorrow, according to a PTI report.

“There is a possibility that Laxman, along with some of the NCA coaches, will travel with the new look squad to Zimbabwe. Laxman and the NCA team have always filled in whenever Rahul Dravid and the first team coaches have taken periodic breaks during their stint,” a BCCI source revealed to PTI.
