Wahab Riaz Appointed Supervisor For Champions Trophy 2025

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named former pacer Wahab Riaz as a supervisor for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to take place in February. This marks a significant moment for Pakistan as it hosts its first ICC event since 1997. Alongside his supervisory role, Riaz will serve as a mentor for the national team during the high-profile tournament.

Preparations are in full swing, with stadium renovations across the country and heightened security measures being prioritized. However, the ICC is yet to release the official tournament schedule, keeping fans eagerly anticipating the event.

Wahab Riaz’s Past Contributions to Pakistan Cricket

Riaz, 39, has previously played influential roles within Pakistan cricket. He served as the Chief Selector ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023 but faced criticism as Pakistan failed to progress beyond the group stage. This disappointment was followed by another early exit in the T20 World Cup the following year, prompting his removal from the position.

Before this, Riaz held the role of team manager but stepped down during a management overhaul in the PCB. Despite these setbacks, his appointment as supervisor and mentor signals PCB’s trust in his experience to guide the team effectively in the Champions Trophy.

A Legacy on and off the Field

Debuting against Zimbabwe in February 2008, Riaz had an illustrious international career, representing Pakistan in 27 Tests, 91 ODIs, and 36 T20Is. He amassed 83 Test wickets, 120 ODI wickets, and 34 T20I dismissals over a career spanning more than a decade. His fiery spell against Shane Watson during the 2015 ODI World Cup remains a standout moment, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure.

Riaz retired from all forms of cricket in August 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and resilience. As Pakistan gears up for the Champions Trophy, his appointment brings both experience and inspiration to a team looking to reclaim its glory on the global stage.

With PCB’s ongoing structural changes, discussions around Mohammad Yousuf’s position as batting coach at the National Cricket Academy further highlight the team’s evolving dynamics. As the tournament approaches, all eyes are on Pakistan to deliver both on and off the field.
