Opener Shubman Gill was left stranded on 98* when rain brought the curtains down on their innings in the third ODI against West Indies on Wednesday in Trinidad. Gill carried his brilliant run of form in the third game but heavy downpour meant he missed out his maiden ODI hundred by two runs.

Though Gill’s knock proved enough for India to win the contest and wrap up the series 3-0, the disappointment of not not reaching the triple figure mark was massive. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, the young top-order batter said that he was hoping to get just one more over of play to complete his ton.

“Was hoping to get a hundred, but that (rain) was not under my control. Was very disappointed how I got out in the first two ODIs. I tried to play according to the ball and let the instincts take over. I wanted only one more over, was hoping for that,” Gill said.

Shubman Gill shared two significant partnerships with Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer to propel India to 225/3 in 36 overs. In reply, West Indies were bowled out for 137 with Yuzvendra Chahal returning with figures of 4/17 in his four overs.

“The ball was gripping a bit after 30 overs” – Shubman Gill

While it was a brilliant wicket to bat on, Shubman Gill revealed that the ball was gripping on the wicket after 30 overs. However, the opener was happy to make the opportunities count.

“The wicket played fantastically in all the three games. The ball was gripping a bit after 30 overs. Happy with my peformance,” Gill concluded.

India will now lock horns with West Indies in a five-match T20I series, starting on July 29 (Friday). Shubman Gill is not a part of the T20Is and will return to India.
