“Was Really Gutted’: Gaikwad Turns Pain Into Power With Stunning Hundred

In the second match of the ongoing series against South Africa, Ruturaj Gaikwad finally delivered his first One Day International century for India. Coming in at number four, he raced to his hundred in just 77 balls — an impressive feat that demonstrated both timing and intent.

In the knock, Gaikwad struck 12 boundaries and two sixes, pushing his strike rate up while anchoring India’s innings with composure.

On a day when the pitch and conditions were favourable for batting, Gaikwad seized the rare opportunity to cement his place. With several senior players unavailable due to injury, the chance to bat at No. 4 opened up — and he made it count in style.

Resilience After Early Disappointment

The road to this achievement wasn’t smooth. In the first ODI of the series, Gaikwad was dismissed early — for just eight runs — caught at point by a spectacular one-handed catch. That failure invited criticism and ignited debate about whether he deserved another shot given his unfamiliar position in the batting order.

Yet instead of letting the setback define him, he returned stronger. The ton in the second match wasn’t just about personal redemption; it sent a message that he could handle pressure, bounce back, and contribute meaningfully at the international level. For many, it reaffirmed that talent plus temperament can thrive when given the right opportunity.

Strong Partnership and Team Impact

This was not a solitary effort — Gaikwad’s century came in partnership with Virat Kohli, and together they put on a formidable stand. Their 195-run pair was not only the backbone of India’s innings but also the highest partnership for any wicket between India and South Africa in ODIs.

Their aggressive yet calculated batting helped India post a daunting total, putting significant pressure on South Africa’s chase. Gaikwad’s willingness to attack — accelerating after his fifty and punishing a spinner with 16 runs in a single over — showed maturity and intent.    The knock demonstrated that he can play a match-defining role under favourable conditions, and perhaps more importantly, that he can adapt to a middle-order role when needed.
