Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar, currently named among the reserves for the Asia Cup 2025, has secured another opportunity in English domestic cricket. He has signed with Hampshire County Cricket Club for the final two rounds of the ongoing County Championship.
This stint will allow Sundar to gain valuable match practice in challenging conditions, while also strengthening Hampshire’s squad as they fight to stay clear of relegation.
The club confirmed his participation in two crucial fixtures – the first against Somerset at Taunton from September 15 to 18, followed by a clash against Surrey at the Utilita Bowl from September 24 to 27. For Sundar, this assignment comes at a perfect time, as he remains on standby for India in the Asia Cup, while also aiming to keep himself sharp for upcoming international commitments.
Strong Test Series Performance and County Experience
Sundar’s reputation has grown significantly following his recent exploits in the five-Test series against England earlier this year. He amassed 284 runs at an average of 47, including his maiden Test century at Old Trafford – a knock that played a pivotal role in helping India salvage a draw in a high-pressure situation.
Alongside his batting contributions, the off-spinning all-rounder also picked up seven wickets, proving his utility with both bat and ball.
This is not Sundar’s first taste of county cricket. In 2022, he turned out for Lancashire, representing them in the County Championship as well as the One-Day Cup. That earlier experience has helped him understand English conditions better, making him a valuable addition to Hampshire’s setup as they face must-win games in the final stages of the season.

Hampshire’s 2025 campaign has been turbulent, and their situation worsened after an eight-point penalty imposed by the ECB for breaching pitch regulations. As a result, they now find themselves in the relegation zone and are in desperate need of points to avoid the drop. The arrival of Washington Sundar is expected to bolster their chances, as his versatile skills can provide depth in both batting and bowling.
The management is hopeful that his international pedigree and recent form will inspire the side during these decisive encounters.
