The IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, saw several exciting signings, but one of the most notable was Washington Sundar’s move to Gujarat Titans for ₹3.2 crore. After being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sundar attracted significant attention from franchises but ultimately landed in the Titans’ squad. Let’s delve into his journey, reasons behind the bidding trends, and what this means for both Sundar and the Gujarat Titans.

Washington Sundar’s IPL Journey

Washington Sundar made his IPL debut in 2017 for Rising Pune Supergiants, showcasing his talent as a reliable off-spinner. Over the years, he played for various franchises, including Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

During his three seasons with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sundar managed to pick up 10 wickets in 18 games. However, his batting left much to be desired, with just 161 runs from 14 innings. Despite flashes of brilliance, consistency eluded him.

In 60 IPL matches, Sundar has taken 37 wickets at an economy rate of 7.24. With the bat, he has accumulated 378 runs at a modest average of 13.50 and a strike rate of 116.30. These numbers highlight his potential but also underscore areas for improvement.

Washington Sundar’s Domestic Cricket Achievements

Sundar burst onto the domestic scene with Tamil Nadu, scoring his maiden first-class century against Tripura in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy. His standout performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Tamil Nadu Premier League earned him a place in the Duleep Trophy and later the national squad.

With 47 wickets in 52 T20Is at an average of 23.48 and an impressive economy of 6.87, Sundar has proven to be a reliable bowler in the shortest format. While his batting numbers in T20Is—161 runs at a strike rate of 128.80—are not exceptional, they show glimpses of his ability to contribute in crucial moments.

Gujarat Titans: Building a Balanced Squad

Gujarat Titans have been strategic in building a balanced squad. Sundar’s skills as a spin-bowling all-rounder add depth to their lineup. Sundar is likely to serve as a utility player, contributing with economical overs in the middle phase and playing a supportive role with the bat.
