South African opener Aiden Markram reflected on his post-match celebration with a school friend following his match-winning performance in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord’s. Markram shared that he was thrilled to receive a beer from his old friend and happily accepted the gesture.
Despite being dismissed for a duck in the first innings, the 30-year-old bounced back strongly in the second. He displayed remarkable composure against Australia’s formidable pace attack, scoring a brilliant 136. His crucial 147-run partnership with skipper Temba Bavuma was instrumental in chasing down the 282-run target.
When Aiden Markram was dismissed, South Africa were just six runs away from victory, which they achieved with five wickets in hand. Responding to a journalist’s question about the celebration, the Centurion-born player said:
“That was cool. That was one of my mates from school. He wanted me to come over and I said, Flip man, I can’t its too busy, it’s chaos. And then he was like, here’s a beer. I was like okay, I’m in. So, I’ve had my first one for today and I’m pretty sure there will be a few more.”
Aiden Markram Reflects On T20 World Cup After WTC Final Win
Markram also shared that his determination to see the chase through was driven by the pain of South Africa’s heartbreaking defeat to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Speaking at the press conference, he said, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:
“I thought a lot about the T20 World Cup last night and how hopeless I felt sitting on the side after getting out. I was like, I don’t want to sit there again. So, this gave me a bit of motivation to make sure I stayed at the crease, if I could.”
”But never once thought about the achievements and what would come with it. It was always about just trying to get the job done and trying to win.”
