The Chennai Super Kings’ camp for their match on April 20 against the Mumbai Indians saw the arrival of 17-year-old opener Ayush Mhatre. Mhatre came into the mid-season trials and impressed the talent scouts.
With Ruturaj Gaikwad out with an elbow injury, Mhatre is being checked as a possible replacement. He had a splendid debut season for Mumbai, scoring 458 runs from seven games with two hundreds and one fifty in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

The Chennai Super Kings have taken a vital step in signing 17-year-old opening batter Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is out of this IPL season with a hairline fracture of the elbow. A week before, Mhatre had been called for trials, which were quite successful and impressive to the management. With Gaikwad being out injured, captaincy duties have been taken over by MS Dhoni for the Men in Yellow.
CSK is going through tough times, having lost five out of seven matches and being at the bottom of the chart. Their batting has underperformed so badly that it is time for grace against a top team like Mumbai Indians at Wankhede. An uphill path lies ahead, but with Dhoni steering the ship and Mhatre being brought into the fold, a turnaround looks hopeful. An extra push from Mhatre could go a long way for CSK, and perhaps the young gun’s flair and zeal would be the kindling needed to get CSK’s ship back in the race.
Mhatre’s substantial contributions in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he aggregated 458 runs in seven matches, featuring two hundreds and a fifty, may have entered the thought process of CSK management. An increasing pressure from the CSK camp to perform is put on the team, and Mhatre is expected to deliver the goods and lift CSK up in the table. The match against Mumbai Indians will be a crucial test for CSK; even so, Mhatre’s performance could sway the outcome either way.
