Watch: Controversial Umpiring Decision Saves Mitchell Marsh In AUS vs IND 2nd Test

The second Test between India and Australia in Adelaide witnessed a controversial moment involving Mitchell Marsh, sparking debates over the third umpire’s decision-making. During the 58th over of Australia’s innings, Ravichandran Ashwin bowled to Marsh, who attempted a front-foot defense but missed, and the ball struck his pad.

India’s lbw appeal was dismissed by the on-field umpire, prompting the visitors to seek a review. However, the third umpire, Richard Kettlebrough, ruled Marsh not out after identifying a spike on the Snickometer, failing to check ball tracking.

Replays revealed that the ball hit Marsh’s pad before the bat, a crucial detail overlooked in the decision-making process. Despite later confirmation that the ball tracking would have upheld the on-field call of “not out,” India’s loss of an important review added to the controversy.

India’s Missed Opportunity and the Umpire’s Explanation

The incident highlighted a procedural lapse, with the third umpire bypassing standard protocol to verify ball tracking. Kettlebrough justified his decision, stating that conclusive evidence to determine whether the ball struck the pad or bat first was unavailable.

The subsequent ball tracking analysis supported the umpire’s call of “not out” due to an umpire’s call on the impact. Although the outcome would have remained unchanged, India’s chance to retain their review was lost. This umpiring gaffe drew criticism, with fans and experts questioning the lack of thoroughness in the review process.

Ashwin Strikes Back to Dismiss Marsh

Marsh’s reprieve was short-lived as Ashwin dismissed him in the 64th over for just nine runs. Attempting to defend another delivery, Marsh edged the ball to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Curiously, replays showed a flat line on the UltraEdge when the ball passed his bat, with the noise likely caused by his bat brushing the pad.

Nevertheless, Marsh walked off, believing he had edged it, gifting India a crucial breakthrough. The controversial lbw incident and Marsh’s eventual dismissal underscored the fine margins and drama characteristic of high-stakes Test cricket.
