[WATCH]- Glenn Phillips Nearly Strikes Umpire With Bat In Frustration During PAK vs NZ CT 2025 Opener

New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips nearly struck umpire Richard Kettleborough with his bat in frustration during the 2025 Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan at Karachi’s National Stadium. In the video, Phillips can be seen expressing his frustration after mishitting a shot and swinging his bat wildly.

The incident took place in the 46th over bowled by Naseem Shah, as Phillips attempted to hit a boundary on the on-side. However, he mistimed the shot, sending the ball along the ground for a single. As Phillips swung his bat in frustration, Kettleborough quickly moved out of the way, and the two shared a lighthearted moment afterward.

Glenn Phillips showcased his power once again against Pakistan’s bowlers, smashing a quick-fire 61 off 39 balls with aggressive stroke play, reminding the hosts of his unbeaten century in the previous tri-series match in Lahore.

Phillips, Latham, and Young guide New Zealand to 320

Opting to bowl first, Pakistan struggled to make regular breakthroughs. While they reduced New Zealand to 73/3 from 39/1, a 118-run partnership between Will Young and Tom Latham steadied the Kiwis. Young was the first to reach a century, scoring 107 before being dismissed by Naseem Shah.

Latham then formed another strong 125-run stand with Glenn Phillips, which came off just 74 balls, with Latham remaining unbeaten on 118 to lift New Zealand to 320. Naseem and Haris Rauf each took two wickets for Pakistan, while Abrar Ahmed claimed one. However, Rauf gave away a hefty 83 runs in his 10 overs.

Having beaten Pakistan twice in the tri-series, Mitchell Santner’s side will be confident of defending 320. Yet, with Pakistan’s recent successful chase of 350 against South Africa in Karachi, they’ll be optimistic about securing a win.
