Hashmatullah Shahidi Collides With Umpire

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi found himself in an unusual situation during the 2025 Champions Trophy match against England at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. While attempting a quick single, Shahidi accidentally collided with on-field umpire Rod Tucker, losing his balance and tumbling to the ground. Fortunately, he managed to recover quickly and complete the run safely.

Shahidi had walked in to bat after Afghanistan lost early wickets, joining opener Ibrahim Zadran in the middle. The two batsmen played cautiously, ensuring stability before accelerating. The collision occurred in the 23rd over when Shahidi pushed the ball towards mid-on and took off for a single. Failing to notice Tucker in his path, he ran into the umpire, stumbled, and fell. Despite the mishap, he successfully reached the crease without further trouble.

Afghanistan’s Middle-Order Stabilizes the Innings

Entering at the fall of the third wicket, Shahidi contributed to a crucial 103-run partnership with Zadran. His innings of 40 runs off 67 balls, including three boundaries, played a significant role in Afghanistan’s recovery. However, his dismissal brought Azmatullah Omarzai to the crease, who maintained the momentum with an aggressive 41 off 31 deliveries.

Opting to bat first, Afghanistan had a disastrous start, losing three wickets inside the powerplay with only 39 runs on the board. From there, Zadran anchored the innings with a composed century, supported by Shahidi and Omarzai. Their efforts ensured that Afghanistan regained control and built a strong platform.

Afghanistan Pushes for a Competitive Total

By the 47th over, Afghanistan had reached 299/5, with Zadran and Mohammad Nabi at the crease. With three overs remaining, the team aimed to post a challenging total against England. A strong finish would boost their chances of staying in the tournament and securing a crucial victory.

The match remained finely poised, with Afghanistan relying on their bowlers to defend the total and keep their Champions Trophy hopes alive.
