New Zealand batter Henry Nicholls got dismissed in a bizarre fashion on Thursday against England in the first innings of the third test match at Headingley, Leeds. He walked back to the pavilion for 19 runs.

Batting first, the New Zealand team was in a spot of bother, having lost four wickets for just 83 runs on the board. Skipper Kane Williamson too was back in the hut, scoring only 31 runs. Henry Nicholls walked out to partner Daryl Mitchell at the crease.

Nicholls and Mitchell put together a decent partnership of 40 runs. Just when it looked like they could take the partnership deep, Nicholls got out in an unusual fashion. In the fifty-sixth over, Jack Leach bowled a full delivery, which Nicholls drove well. However, the ball hit Daryl Mitchell’s bat and deflected, and flew to Alex Lees at mid-off.

Watch the dismissal here:

Henry Nicholls managed to put on 19 runs off 99 balls, including a boundary during his stay at the crease. The dismissal reminded the fans of a similar incident when Andrew Symonds had got out. The ball ricocheted off the right leg of Michael Clarke at the non-striker’s end, and Symonds was caught.

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell steady New Zealand’s innings

New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell and wicket-keeper Tom Blundell’s partnership helped their team to steady their ship. The visitors were reeling at 123/5 after Henry Nicholl’s dismissal. However, Mitchell and Blundell have added 102 runs so far for the sixth wicket partnership.

New Zealand is 225/5 at the end of the play on day 1. Daryl Mitchell is unbeaten on 78 runs off 159 balls, including six boundaries and two sixes. Meanwhile, Tom Blundell has scored 45* runs off 108 balls, including five boundaries. For England, Stuart Broad and Jack Leach have been the pick of the bowlers. They picked two wickets each, while Jamie Overton dismissed Devon Conway.
