[WATCH] ‘I Was Just Looking To…’: Ayush Badoni Reflects On Setting A World Record’s With 19 Sixes

Ayush Badoni, who is captain of South Delhi Superstars, believes that the most important factor for his score of 165 in just 55 balls against North Delhi Strikers was his ability to time the ball. Badoni hit a record 19 sixes during that match. The 24-year-old right-handed batsman’s outstanding performance helped achieve victory for his team by 112 runs.

In this match, Ayush broke Sahil Chauhan’s and Chris Gayle’s joint record for the maximum number of sixes hit by one player in an innings. Each of them had hit 18 sixes before him in T20 games. He also shares an opening partnership of 286 runs with Priyansh Arya, who opened for him at the top.

“I was just looking to time the ball well, I never thought I would end up hitting 19 sixes in an innings. I just focus on timing the ball and not trying to hit the ball hard,” Badoni told PTI Videos.

In a short period he has played for a first-class team like Lucknow Super Giants, Badoni has had a wonderful show at the wickets in this tournament: he is considered to be one of the better players. After the courageous display he showed during this year’s DPL, there may be eyes on him from various quarters.

“I am not thinking about the (IPL) mega auction yet; my focus is on winning the Delhi Premier League right now as a skipper,” he said. “Playing in the IPL has made life a lot easier for me as a batter here (DPL). We face world-class bowlers there, and then coming here and playing becomes relatively easy.”

Assistant coach Jonty Rhodes of LSG compared Badoni to former Proteas power-hitter Herschelle Gibbs

“Jonty and I have a great relationship. I want to thank him for his kind words and just want to say that ‘see you soon, Jonty’.

Badoni has been at the forefront of South Delhi Superstarz. In DPL’s inaugural season, he and Priyansh Arya together scored 1,091 runs. As said by the skipper, good partnerships ease the burden on lower-order batsmen.

“I know that Priyansh and I have done well and our batting does help take the pressure off the team. But they come and tell me after the game that they too are eager to contribute with the bat. There are a few youngsters who have impressed and now it is our turn to groom them well,” he said.
