Kolkata Knight Riders wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz took an outstanding catch against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, May 4 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad in the 2023 Indian Premier League. His effort sent Marco Jansen back to the hut. The Kolkata Knight Riders defenced 172, winning the match by five runs.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad needed 21 runs off the last two overs, with four wickets in hand. Vaibhav Arora was brought in to bowl the nineteenth over. He bowled a wide delivery to start off but then got the team much-needed wickets. Arora bowled a full delivery outside off-stump to Marco Jansen, who tried to slog it leg-side.

However, the ball took a faint edge and went to the left of the keeper. Gurbaz dived to take a stunning one-handed catch. His effort brought the Kolkata Knight Riders team back into the game. Jansen had to walk back to the hut for just one run off four deliveries.

My heartbeat was touching 200 in the last over Varun Chakravarthy

Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy won the Player of the Match award. He defended nine runs off the last over and finished the match with bowling figures of 1/20 in his four overs. Vaibhav Arora and Shardul Thakur picked a couple of wickets each in the match. Speaking about the game at the post-match presentation, Chakravarthy said,

“My heartbeat was touching 200 in the last over, but I wanted them to make it to the longer part of the ground. The ball was slipping a lot and my best bet was the longer side and that was my only hope. My first over I went for 12 runs, Markram hit me for 2 fours and that’s how the game goes. Last year I was bowling around 85kmph, I was trying out many things and I realized that I needed to work on my revolutions and I did work on it.”
