England took a step closer to victory after picking a couple of quick wickets in the morning session of day 5 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium against India. After Jack Leach removed Cheteshwar Pujara, James Anderson bowled a peach of a delivery to remove the set batsman Shubman Gill to put the visitors on top on day 5.

Joe Root started the proceeding with his two spinners – Leach and Dom Bess and they came out to hunt nine wickets to go 1-0 up in the series. The left-arm spinner, who had a tough time in the first innings, was right on the money as he removed Cheteshwar Pujara with a brilliant delivery which just jumped off the rough to find the edge of Pujara’s bat and Ben Stokes completed another fine catch.

Since then, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, who was due for a big knock, looked at ease tackling the spinners. Gill, in particular, played shots off his backfoot and off the front and on all sides of the park and in the process, brought his half-century to continue his brilliant run in Test cricket. Just when everyone started to think that Shubman Gill was looking for a big knock, Joe Root unleashed his senior pacer and James Anderson produced a ripper to knock the youngster.

It was a good length ball that pitched around the off-stump and nips back in, Gill produced forward but was late in closing the bat-pad gap. The ball goes past that and uproots the off-peg as Shubman Gill hangs in there in complete disbelief. This is James Anderson at his best. He enjoyed that as well, jumps up, and lets out a roar in delight. So the bowling change works for Root and England.

James Anderson backed Shubman Gill’s wicket with another off Ajinkya Rahane to break India’s middle-order to have India at 92 for four. The hosts will now require a big knock of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant to save this Test match from losing.
