England’s left-arm spinner Liam Dawson made an important breakthrough by dismissing India’s well-set opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on Day 1 (Wednesday, July 23) of the fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. Returning to Test cricket after eight years, Dawson made an instant impact by striking in just his second over.
The breakthrough came on the first ball of the 41st over of India’s innings. The 35-year-old delivered a good-length ball outside off stump, which Jaiswal stepped forward to defend. However, the left-hander misread the delivery, expecting it to turn. Instead, the ball held its line, took the outside edge of his bat, and was safely caught by Harry Brook at first slip.

Double Blow For India As Both Openers Fall In Second Session
After being asked to bat first in the fourth Test, India’s openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the team a steady start, carefully seeing off the initial phase under cloudy skies. The pair batted sensibly and took India to lunch without any loss at 78/0 in 26 overs, with Rahul on 40* and Jaiswal on 36*.
England got their first breakthrough soon after the interval, with Chris Woakes dismissing Rahul in the 30th over. The right-hander missed out on a fifty, departing for 46 off 98 balls, including four boundaries, bringing an end to a 94-run opening stand.
Jaiswal reached his twelfth Test half-century but couldn’t build on it, as he was dismissed by Liam Dawson for 58 off 107 balls. At the time of the update, India were 131/2 in 45 overs, with Sai Sudharsan (18*) and captain Shubman Gill (6*) batting in the middle.
