Watch – MS Dhoni Drops A Sitter To Give Venkatesh Iyer A Second Chance

MS Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni dropped a sitter to give Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Venkatesh Iyer a second chance in the IPL 2021 final in Dubai on Friday. Meanwhile, batting first, CSK had posted 192 runs on the board riding on Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis’ brilliant show with the bat.

After a cautious start from Shubman Gill in the run chase, Josh Hazlewood got the better of in-form Venkatesh Iyer with a short pitch delivery. The ball found the thick outside edge on the cut, and a reverse-cup from MS Dhoni went wrong as he dropped a sitter.

It was a rare sight and Venkatesh Iyer made full use of the opportunity dispatching the next delivery for a six over the fine-leg fielder.

CSK got a respite despite Faf du Plessis started off with a life on 2, with Dinesh Karthik fumbling a pretty straightforward stumping chance. He went on to lay a platform with Ruturaj Gaikwad, upped the ante, and finished big playing an 86-run knock.

However, the real impetus here came via Uthappa’s 15-ball 31, which Moeen then did well to carry on till the finish. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who bagged the Orange Cap for the highest run-scorer said:

“I think Shakib was about to bowl two overs. I thought I should take on spin as I am a good player of spin. Faf also played lesser balls up front. It is stopping a little. We did brilliantly to get to 192 by hitting some brilliant sixes, off good balls too. We need to bowl well and back it up with the fielding. I wanted him (Faf) to hit that six and add those six important runs (for Orange Cap).”
