Karun Nair, who awaited his long-awaited return after eight years, or rather 3006 days, to Test cricket, was broken-hearted on Saturday. The right-handed batsman was out for a duck off four deliveries with the assistance of an outstanding short cover catch by Ollie Pope. England captain Ben Stokes laid the trap by bowling a wide ball, a shot that Nair tried to use to his advantage, though his stroke was unfortunately fielded to perfection by Pope.

This dismissal was when India was comfortably placed, scoring 447/5. Rishabh Pant was playing a confident innings at the crease with 134 runs in his account. England had already managed to get rid of Indian captain Shubman Gill, who scored 147 off 227 balls, before the arrival of Nair, but India had re-established their innings through strong partnerships.

Heartbreak for Karun Nair on Test Comeback

The dismissal of Karun Nair had been a quite surprising event. He looked like he was gutted as he walked the long distance to the pavilion, unable to accept what did occur. The catch by Ollie Pope was a stunner and he was flying when he managed to grab the ball. Nair took costly aggressive shot choices, which were justified at the point, but in the end, this was what got him in trouble.

The sacking was a big blow to Nair who had been struggling to restore his shape and make a good comeback to Test matches. Nair will be optimistic to recover and make headway in the game despite the slump.

Rishabh Pant has continued to bat with confidence and will be the one to watch as the game progresses. The situation of India seems good, yet the team will be willing to develop on their advantage and put pressure on the English team. India will be hoping to score very well and come up with a fighting total with Pant at the crease to provide a platform to win the rest of the match.
