Madhya Pradesh captain Rajat Patidar showcased his stellar form with a blazing half-century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024 final against Mumbai on Sunday, December 15, at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

After Mumbai opted to bowl, Shardul Thakur struck early, dismissing MP openers Arpit Gaud (3) and Harsh Gawli (2) cheaply. Harpreet Singh Bhatia managed a sluggish 15 off 23, while Subhranshu Senapati added 23 off 17.

Rajat Patidar entered at number 5 and forged a 32-run fifth-wicket stand with Venkatesh Iyer (17 off 9). Despite MP losing half their side for just 86 runs, Patidar maintained his aggressive approach, smashing a quick fifty in only 28 balls.

The 31-year-old continued his aggressive batting in the final two overs, where he launched four sixes and a four, taking control of the innings. Patidar finished unbeaten on 81 off 40 balls, including six boundaries and six sixes, helping Madhya Pradesh reach a total of 174/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

With this performance, Patidar moved up to second place on the SMAT 2024 run-scorer leaderboard, amassing 428 runs across nine innings, which includes five half-centuries.

Mumbai lost Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer early in their challenging IPL chase for a crucial win

Mumbai began their chase of 175 with opener Prithvi Shaw breaking free in the second over, hitting a six off Tripuresh Singh’s third delivery. However, Singh made a swift comeback, dismissing Shaw on the very next ball for 10 off 6.

Singh continued his impressive spell by removing Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored a quick 16 off 9 balls. Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, looked composed at the crease. At the end of the six overs, Mumbai were 50/2, with Rahane unbeaten on 22 and Suryakumar Yadav just getting started on 1.
