Ex-Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri erupted in laughter when Australian commentator Kerry O’Keeffe jokingly mocked former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Ian Smith for the BlackCaps’ defeat to India in the 2023 World Cup semifinal.
This happened during the opening Test between Australia and Pakistan in Perth on December 14. In a video circulating on X (formerly known as Twitter), O’Keeffe narrates a story about Shaheen Afridi’s brother, Riyaz, who refrained from eating for two days after Pakistan’s losses.
O’Keeffe then humorously inquired from Smith about the duration he abstained from eating after New Zealand’s defeat in the 2023 World Cup semifinal. O’Keeffe made the following statement on Fox Sports:
“One of seven brothers, of course, Shaheen Shah Afridi. His elder brother Riyaz was very formidable bowler, terrific first-class record. Do you know when he was young, Pakistan lost a Test match, he didn’t eat for two days. What did you do when New Zealand lost.”
In response, Smith said:
“(chuckles) That’s a seriously early punch.”

For those unfamiliar, India defeated New Zealand in both a league game and the semifinals during the 2023 World Cup. This followed India’s defeat to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semifinal and the 2021 World Test Championship final.
However, in the 2023 World Cup, India faced a loss to eventual champions Australia, who are New Zealand’s trans-Tasman rivals.
