[WATCH] Ravindra Jadeja’s ‘Bear Hug’ Stuns Labuschagne As Smith Fumes Over Stalled Single

The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final between India and Australia turned into a high-stakes contest at the Dubai International Stadium. An incident involving Ravindra Jadeja and Marnus Labuschagne led to Australia’s captain, Steve Smith, expressing his displeasure to the on-field umpires, Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth. The moment occurred in the 21st over when Smith punched the ball towards Labuschagne, and Jadeja extended his right foot.

Replays suggested that the ball might have hit Labuschagne’s bat before deflecting to Rohit Sharma at mid-wicket. However, what frustrated Smith was Jadeja seemingly holding Labuschagne and preventing him from running for a single. Former England captain Nasser Hussain, who was commentating, described it as a “hug,” highlighting the unusual moment on the field.

Jadeja Strikes Twice, India Tightens Grip

Shortly after the heated incident, Jadeja made an impact with the ball, dismissing Labuschagne for 29 in the 22nd over. The left-arm spinner delivered a drifting ball that skidded on after pitching, trapping the Australian batter on the pads. Without much deliberation, the umpire raised his finger.

Although Labuschagne quickly chatted with Smith, he decided against taking a review and walked back to the pavilion. This marked the fourth time Jadeja had dismissed Labuschagne in ODIs, with the batter managing 120 runs off 180 balls against him while losing his wicket on four occasions. Jadeja continued his brilliant spell, soon claiming the wicket of Josh Inglis, leaving Australia struggling at four down in the 27th over.

Australia’s Start and India’s Response

Earlier in the match, Steve Smith won the toss and elected to bat first. Australia, playing their first game in Dubai in the tournament, made two changes to their lineup, bringing in Tanveer Sangha and Cooper Connolly. Meanwhile, India retained the same XI that played against New Zealand. India struck early, with Mohammed Shami removing Connolly for a duck.

Although Travis Head took an aggressive approach, taking on the Indian seamers, his innings was cut short at 39 by Varun Chakarvarthy, who got the better of the left-hander. With India tightening their grip on the game, Australia faced an uphill battle in the crucial semi-final clash.
