[WATCH]- Rishabh Pant Departs for 81 After Attempting Big Shot in IND vs AFG 2026 Test

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant narrowly missed out on a century after being dismissed for 81 while attempting an aggressive shot near the end of the first session on Day 2 of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur on Sunday, June 7. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi picked up the wicket.

Pant continued his innings on Day 2 after bringing up his half-century on the opening day. Early in the session, he received a lifeline when Afghanistan chose not to review an edge that carried to the wicketkeeper. Mixing regular strike rotation with occasional boundaries, Pant built a crucial 169-run stand for the fourth wicket alongside captain Shubman Gill.

The left-hander also survived a tense moment during the 101st over due to some casual running between the wickets. While jogging for a single towards the non-striker’s end, he nearly paid the price as the wicketkeeper attempted a direct hit. Pant managed to make his ground only with a desperate late stretch.

However, Pant failed to make full use of the reprieve as he attempted another attacking shot against the off-spinner soon after. He stepped out looking to loft the ball over long-off but only managed to mistime it high into the air with little distance. Azmatullah Omarzai adjusted slightly at deep mid-off and completed a safe catch. Have a look at the dismissal here

This was Rishabh Pant’s first fifty in five innings after he failed to cross the 30-run mark during the home series against South Africa in late 2025.

Team India Lose Quick Wickets Late in First Session on Day 2, Including Rishabh Pant’s Dismissal

Afghanistan fought their way back into the match with the crucial wicket of centurion Shubman Gill. Dhruv Jurel was dismissed soon after following a poor leave, while Rishabh Pant also departed shortly later. From a strong position at 416-3, Team India suddenly slipped to 456-6.

At the time of writing, spin-bowling all-rounders Manav Suthar and Washington Sundar were at the crease, aiming to guide India safely to the Lunch break.
