India captain, Rohit Sharma, received applause from his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, for his crucial half-century that secured a victory against Ireland in the 2024 T20 World Cup opener on June 5. The Indian team demonstrated comprehensive performance across all areas, winning by eight wickets and starting their World Cup journey strongly.
In the match, Ireland batted first but struggled significantly, being dismissed for just 96 runs in 16 overs. Indian bowlers Hardik Pandya (3/27), Jasprit Bumrah (2/6), and Arshdeep Singh (2/35) delivered a stellar performance on a challenging pitch with inconsistent bounce, making it difficult for the Irish batters to score.
Leading India’s response, Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role in the chase, scoring a 36-ball fifty. Despite facing difficulties and being beaten several times, Rohit remained resolute, seizing opportunities to hit boundaries and maintain the team’s momentum. His gritty innings ensured India overcame any potential challenges. Ritika Sajdeh, watching from the stands, celebrated his achievement with enthusiastic applause and a broad smile when Rohit reached his milestone in the 10th over.

After the match, Rohit Sharma commented on the unpredictable nature of the pitch. Reflecting on the win, he said: “We were quite unsure of what to expect of the pitch. It’s a new ground, new venue, drop-in pitch. Not really aware of what it is like playing on a pitch which is 5 months old. It was all about getting used to the conditions, so that’s why we bowled first to look at the conditions, see how the pitch plays. Don’t think the wicket settled down when we batted second.”
He emphasized the importance of securing the victory, stating: “To get those two points was very important. When there’s enough on the pitch, you’ve got to stick to the basics, think of bowling Test match lengths, try and hit them consistently. All these guys have played a lot of Test cricket, Arshdeep’s the only guy who hasn’t played a lot of it. With him, swinging the ball back in to the right handers was vital.”
Looking ahead, India is set to face Pakistan next in the 2024 T20 World Cup, with the match scheduled for Sunday at the same venue in New York. This upcoming game is anticipated to be a high-stakes encounter, with India aiming to build on their positive start to the tournament.
