As India captain Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer were approached by a fan requesting them to ensure their victory at the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for 2025, both players burst into laughter. Regardless of India’s loss to Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series, it was paramount that they win the next ICC trophy, according to the fan.
The Men in Blue actually won the last ICC tournament held which was the 2024 T20 World Cup. They had also won it back in 2013 when an MS Dhoni led Indian team defeated England in final. In fact India lost its previous edition of the Champions Trophy final to none other than their arch-rivals Pakistan in 2017. Here is how this brief dialogue took place between these two individuals:

Significantly, Sri Lanka will not participate in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which was initially planned to take place in Pakistan.

Rohit Sharma, captain of India, dismissed any suggestion that his team had taken things lightly against Sri Lanka during ODIs after losing the three-match series by 2-0. In his analysis subsequent to the game (through Cricbuzz), he stated:
“It is a joke, when you are playing for India there is never going to be complacency. When I am captain there is no chance of that.”
Rohit also mentioned that spin was not an issue, even though the visitors lost 27 wickets to spinners in the ODI series, stating:
“I don’t think it is a concern (spin problems). But it is something we have to look at individually and as a gameplan.”
Significantly, Team India suffered their first ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka since 1997. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, the team will now shift their focus to a lengthy Test season, beginning with a two-match Test series in Bangladesh next month. This will be followed by three home Tests against New Zealand in October. India will then travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
