[WATCH]- Rohit Sharma Reaches Chandigarh After Clearing Fitness Test Ahead of Afghanistan Series

Former India captain Rohit Sharma has recovered from a hamstring concern in time and is set to return to international duty. The experienced opener arrived in Chandigarh on June 10 to join the national squad ahead of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, starting June 13, 2026.

His arrival quickly went viral on social media after a 30-second clip surfaced online. The shaky, fan-recorded video shows a group moving through a modern building with tall pillars and heavy security presence. Rohit was seen at the centre of attention, appearing relaxed and fit.

Dressed in a black polo T-shirt and dark sunglasses, he walked comfortably without any signs of injury. Watch the video here:

Rohit’s presence, however, remains extremely important even though young batting star Shubman Gill has been officially handed leadership responsibilities for this key ODI assignment. The veteran opener has been brought into a focused, high-intensity training camp in Mullanpur, designed to fine-tune preparations and address key areas ahead of next year’s 50-over World Cup.

Why Rohit Sharma’s Role in the Afghanistan Series Matters?

This development will be a big positive for both India and Rohit. At 39, he is at a stage where he cannot afford extended breaks from cricket and must consistently demonstrate his fitness and readiness if he aims to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Allowing another player to seriously challenge for the opening spot could hurt his chances of achieving that goal. The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, have also shown a strict, no-nonsense approach in the past, as seen in Suryakumar Yadav’s exclusion from the T20I captaincy race.

However, Rohit does hold a stronger case given his proven record. Unlike Suryakumar, the batting star has maintained steady ODI form since stepping away from T20Is and Tests, consistently delivering in pressure situations for India.

India’s squad for Afghanistan ODIs: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), KL Rahul (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey
