India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, expressed joy when BCCI Secretary Jay Shah officially announced him as the leader for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Earlier reports suggested that all-rounder Hardik Pandya was also being considered for the role.
Shah commended India’s achievement of winning 10 consecutive games in the 2023 ODI World Cup and assured that the Men in Blue, under Rohit’s captaincy, would break their ICC trophy drought at the 2024 T20 World Cup. He conveyed this message in a video shared by PTI.
“Main aap ko promise karna chahta hoon ki Rohit Sharma ki kaptani mein 2024 mein Barbados mein hum jarur Bharat ka jhanda gadenge (I want to promise you that we’ll lift the trophy in Barbados at the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy).”

Rohit Sharma led India to the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where they were defeated by eventual champions England by 10 wickets. Since the 2013 Champions Trophy, India has not secured an ICC trophy, coming close in the 2023 ODI World Cup but losing to Australia in the final in Ahmedabad.
Notably, Rohit was absent from T20Is for an extended period after the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, the 36-year-old made a comeback during the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan earlier this year. In the third T20I at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, he smashed his record fifth T20I century as India secured a 3-0 series win, marking their last T20I assignment before the T20 World Cup.
